Head for the barricades!

Greetings, fellow humans! This month, I have mostly been painting Ork barricades and a Grot.

The Grot is one of the three looted Grots that I converted last year. I’ve still got to finish his base once the sand dries, but that won’t take me long to do. When I originally converted him I was undecided as to whether to paint him for my existing Deathskull army or a new Blood Axe army. In the end, I decided to make him a Blood Axe (the first of many!), as he’s quite clearly been looting some humies and dressing like those dark green beakie bosses. I opted for a retro red second edition gun casing too, because why not?

I was initially planning to count him as a Runtherd to lead a mob of less flashy Grots. I still might do that (or possibly count him as a Mekboy), or I might just count him as a Grot Boss within his own mob of Grots. After all, humie and beakie units tend to have sergeants leading them, so it seems like a perfectly valid tactic for a sneaky Blood Axe to imitate (even if they are a weedy Grot). Hopefully I’ll manage to paint his two pals next month, as they’re only runts.

As with the Ork scrap piles last month, the Ork barricades are also from the Mekboy Workshop kit that came out alongside the Speed Freeks box a few years ago. I stuck to the same colour scheme as last month, which is a mixture of the original Gorkamorka style (metals and greens) crossed with the Dawn of War style (red details).

Seeing as though Ryza Ruins are an Imperial creation, I decided to paint the girders (and any future Ryza Ruins) in the same green as the Imperial bits on my scrap piles. With Orks being green, it makes sense that they’d see the appeal in looting green buildings, and therefore wouldn’t be overly fussed about changing the colour. I really liked the blue Ryza Ruins in the Galactic Warzones (Desert) article from the November 2019 White Dwarf, so I figured that simply substituting the blue for a green should work nicely.

There’s a lot more red on the barricades compared to the scrap piles, but I’m still very pleased with how things have turned out. I’m very much in the terrain painting zone now, so hopefully I’ll have enough terrain for smaller games of 40k (Kill Team/Combat Patrol) before too long.

    1. Thanks. Unfortunately, I ran out of black spray undercoating the Mekboy Workshop itself, but hopefully I’ll still be able to get it finished this month.
