Dominion bonus round!

Greetings, fellow humans! This week, I have mostly been painting some Kruleboyz. I wanted to get some Kruleboyz painted as soon as I got my copy of the Dominion box, so I thought I’d put together an extra post to share them with the world sooner rather than later.

#NewAoS, #PaintingWarhammer, #WarhammerCommunity

I must admit that I was in two minds when I first saw the Kruleboyz. Whilst they were lovely models I was concerned that they looked too much like Lord of the Rings Orcs and not enough like Warhammer Orcs. After seeing them in the flesh (plastic) however, my concerns have been dismissed. I’ve decided that they look less like Lord of the Rings Orcs and more like Age of Sigmar Orruks.

I wanted to try out a new, quicker colour scheme for my Orks/Orruks, so a new sub-faction seemed like the perfect opportunity. As quick and easy as drybrushing is, it is rather messy and indiscriminate, so inevitably leads to lots of touching up afterwards (at least when I do it). Quite a while ago now, I wondered how things would turn out if I drybrushed everything in grayscale (or off-white) and then simply went over the top with washes. I searched online to see if anybody else had a similar idea and discovered that zenithal highlighting was a thing.

Therefore, I thought I’d give a variation of zenithal highlighting a go, as it seems to be what all the cool kids are doing nowadays. To test out my new colour scheme I assembled a Gutrippa and a Hobgrot Slitta, which were pretty quick/easy to put together. I then sprayed them with Death Guard Green followed by a quick zenithal highlight of Halfords Grey Plastic Primer, holding the can high above the models and at a slight angle. After that, I picked out the non-skin colours and then gave everything a wash. The shield looked a bit dark though, so I did give that a quick drybrush in the end.

Here’s my recipe, for anyone who’s interested:

Basecoat
Skin: Death Guard Green
Straps/poison: Rakarth Flesh
Cloth: Steel Legion Drab
Wood: Rhinox Hide
Metals: Leadbelcher and Retributor Gold
Teef/bones: Zandri Dust
Skareshields/Hobgrot armour plates: Xereus Purple
Necklace charms: Dawnstone

Wash
Skin: Biel-Tan Green
Poison: Druchii Violet
Everything else: Agrax Earthshade

Drybrush
Skareshields/Hobgrot armour plates: Genestealer Purple

Bases
Astrogranite
Castellan Green
Rhinox Hide [random drybrush]
Elysian Green [random drybrush]
Nurgling Green [all over drybrush]
Averland Sunset [random drybrush]
Abaddon Black [rims]

Despite their simpler colour scheme, I’m really happy with how they’ve turned out. Batch painting the rest of these shouldn’t be a problem, and I can apply the same techniques to the rest of the Kruleboyz models in the Dominion box (and those outside it). My existing green bases for our Ghur setting also fit nicely with their swampy background.

When the new 40k Orks come out shortly, I’ll no doubt give a few of those a similar treatment to see how they turn out as well…
